Why ThunderSync16 is a faster solution than traditional USB3 hubs.  What makes ThunderSync16 faster.

Periodically we get asked why ThunderSync16 uses USB2 ports and not USB3.  How can ThunderSync16 achieve transfer speeds of 20GB/S?  We asked Cambrionix help us explain.

USB3 speed can only be realized with USB3 devices since the bits of copper which the data goes over are separate to USB2. This is why a USB3 connector has 5 extra pins because it needs 4x for USB2 and 5x to cover USB3.

To summarize:

If you have a 7x port USB3 hub and attach 7x USB2 devices you would get 480Mbps (USB2 speed) divided by 7 devices ie. 68Mbps in theory.

If you have a 7x port USB3 hub and attach 7x USB3 devices you would get 5Gbps (Typical USB3 speed) divided by 7 devices ie. 714Mbps in theory.

As you can see, a USB3 hub means nothing if you are using either a USB2.0 host port or USB2 devices. It only gives a benefit with USB3 host and USB3 devices.

If you have a 7x port ThunderSync (I know, they don’t exist!) and attach 7x USB2 devices you would get 20,000Mbps (Thunderbolt 2 speed) divided by 7 devices ie. 480Mbps or the full USB2 speed, no division. If you attach USB3 devices to the ThunderSync you would get the same since it only supports USB2.

Now, scale that up to 16x USB2 devices such as iPad/iPhone and most other mobile devices:

ThunderSync will offer 20,000Mbps / 16 = 480Mbps ie the full USB2 bandwidth, no throttling or division.

A USB2 hub will offer 480Mbps / 16 = 30Mbps (this is one-sixteenth the speed of ThunderSync).

A USB3 hub will offer the same as the USB2 hub since we are using USB2 iPads and iPhones in this example.

Thunderbolt 2 to USB2 ports will always be faster.
